Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
The male pattern balding drug was approved in the UK in 2003 and is the latest drug to be approved under the Sexual Dysfunction Drugs in the UK (SDDki) brand name in the hope that more patients will find the advice reassuring.
The move comes just a day after a jury found a doctor with links to links to the use of Viagra to scheme to commit bank fraud.
A court has heard evidence that a female doctor, Dr Helen Butler, had then arranged for Viagra to be given to a male sufferer.
The female doctor was not associated with the scheme.
But Butler, from Devon, was not involved in the scheme.
She said she had arranged for a prescription to be written for a man suffering from erectile dysfunction, and had then taken Viagra.
The man suffered from the condition and had been prescribed Viagra after his doctor told him he was having problems with his erection.
Dr Butler, who was not named, said she had not received a prescription for Viagra on a prescription.
She added that she had not discussed the problem with the male doctor, but had only taken the drug at a time when it had been discussed with the man.
Dr Butler said the man had not asked for the drug, and had not had any problems with his erection.
She said the men were told to take Viagra to relieve their symptoms, and were given a prescription for the drug after discussing their problems with the female doctor.
But Butler said the man did not have any medical problems and could be seen as a "lack of confidence".
The first recorded attempt to commit bank fraud was made in the UK in 2002, when a British bank manager attempted to commit bank fraud by conceiving a woman and then using her own sexual function tests to make sure she was not pregnant.
A jury found the bank fraud scheme was not a "fraudulent and malicious" scheme.
The verdict is final but evidence from Dr Butler and a spokesman said she believed there had been "significant evidence" that the female doctor had arranged for Viagra to be given to a man.
He said: "We have received evidence of the doctor's involvement in the scheme, including the patient's sexual history, and there is no evidence she had any knowledge of the doctor's role in this. We believe there is significant evidence of a relationship."
